Salzkammergut – Lake District of Austria

During incredibly hot temperatures, there is nothing is better than cycling around a lake or alongside the water. During the heatwave, we decided to head to the Salzkammergut area of Austria (our Lake District). This area is gorgeous and one of my favourites for cycling. There are rolling hills and not so many mountains you have to slog up on a boiling hot day. Don’t get me wrong, if you want mountains in this area; there are plenty. The most beautiful routes are by the lakes, which means a distinct lack of huffing and puffing up steep routes on very hot days.

Mattsee – Obertrumersee – Grabensee – Salzkammergut

So today’s choice in 32 degrees was a short route of 25 km with 244m height gain. We started in Mattsee and headed south to Obertrum. This part is beside the main road on the tarmac, which is pretty busy in August, so it can be a bit noisy. However, the bonus is still lovely scenery. Once you get off the main road just past Seeham, it is onto quieter farm roads. The whole route is well-signposted so is easy to follow. Just remember some of them might be behind a tree or bush branch that has grown wildly during summer. I used the Bikeline book of the Salzkammergut, which has the whole region in it. There are 17 different tours that you can choose from in the book. This is just 1 of them.

Cycle & Sunbathe in Salzkammergut

The route takes in 3 lakes, Mattsee, Obertrumer See & Grabensee. There are bathing spots along the route. Some you need to pay to get in, and others are public bathing areas. Unlike us, you could make it a cycle & sunbathe day if you remember your swimming gear!

Lunchstop

We had lunch at a viewing spot at Gerbertsham. We were glad of the shade under an apple tree to enjoy our lunch that we bought locally. I admit to a little snooze after lunch out of the heat of the day and soaking up that view.

From there, we continued on the path through farmland and tracks ending up back in Mattsee. And ended our day with a well-deserved ice cream.
