A 3-day e-bike break in Upper Austria<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Upper Austria (Ober\u00f6sterreich) is often overshadowed by its famous neighbour, the Salzkammergut. But if you step just outside the main tourist hotspots, you\u2019ll find a quieter countryside full of farmland, rivers, lakes, and small villages. It makes a great base for a few days of cycling, and the best part is that you don\u2019t need to pack up and move on each day. Staying in one place keeps it simple and stress-free, while still giving you plenty of variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We based ourselves near Schwanenstadt, which gave us access to a network of cycling routes in every direction. Over three days, we covered farmland paths, river trails, and lakeside routes. Each day felt different, with plenty to see without huge climbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 1 \u2013 Through the farmland and villages<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Our first day took us on a loop from Schwanenstadt to V\u00f6cklabruck. From there, we followed a signed cycle route out into the countryside. Passing through Zell am Pettenfirst and Atzbach before circling back. The ride was full of classic Austrian farmland: fields of corn, stretches of soya bean fields, and countless apple trees. The small villages dotted along the way made perfect places to stop for a quick coffee or just to enjoy the view. It was gentle riding with enough ups and downs to keep the legs turning, but nothing too strenuous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 2 \u2013 Following the River Traun<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the second day, we switched scenery and followed the River Traun east to Wels. The route runs along peaceful riverside paths, ideal for easy pedalling with plenty of nature around. In Wels, we had time for a stroll around the old town and a bite to eat before heading back. We returned along the Traun and then split off on the path along the River Ager to our base. Riding by the water gives a different atmosphere to farmland routes: calmer, cooler, and with plenty of birdlife to spot along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 3 \u2013 To the Traunsee<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The third day was different again. We cycled towards the Traunsee, passing the Traun Waterfalls and rolling farmland before reaching the lake. Once there, we followed the east side as far as the road would allow. The views across the water towards Gmunden are pretty, and down the lake is stunning, with mountains dropping straight into the lake. After soaking in the scenery, we picked up the R4 Traun cycle path for the return journey. It was a satisfying day with a mix of countryside and lakeside riding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Upper Austria works for a short break<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

What stood out was how different each day felt. Farmland, rivers, and lakes, three ingredients that never disappoint on a cycling holiday. By staying just outside the Salzkammergut, we enjoyed quieter cycle routes and lower accommodation costs, while still being close enough to enjoy some of the famous lakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

For anyone looking for a three-day cycling break, this part of Upper Austria is an excellent choice. You get variety, beautiful views, and well-marked cycle paths, but without the crowds. The riding is manageable for most, with only gentle ascents, which is perfect on an e-bike, and there\u2019s always something new around the next corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
