Here is a no-nonsense guide to the gear you will actually need!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, you\u2019ve got the e-bike (or at least picked one out) and you\u2019re ready to ride. Great! But before you set off into the wild\u2014or just down to the shops\u2014it\u2019s worth sorting out some basic gear. Not the kind that makes you look like you’re on the Tour de France\u2026 just the stuff that\u2019ll make your ride safer, smoother, and way more fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what you actually<\/em> need as an e-bike beginner – Points 1-4 are a must,<\/strong> the rest is just nice to have!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

1. A Proper Helmet<\/strong> – essential<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s start with the obvious. Your e-bike goes faster than a regular pushbike, especially on hills. So, treat your noggin with respect and get a decent helmet. No need to splash out hundreds, but don\u2019t buy the cheapest one from a bargain bin either. Look for one with good ventilation, a snug fit, and ideally MIPS technology (that\u2019s a fancy safety feature, not a biscuit). MIPS = Multi-directional Impact Protection System. There is normally a yellow sticker on the back of the helmet to confirm this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Bike Lock \u2013 A Good One<\/strong> – essential<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

E-bikes aren\u2019t cheap, and unfortunately, neither are bike thieves. You\u2019ll need a solid lock\u2014ideally a D-lock<\/strong> or a folding lock<\/strong> with a high security rating. If you’re leaving your bike out and about, consider using two locks for extra peace of mind. Think of it as your e-bike\u2019s security blanket. Lock the frame to an immovable object, not just the wheel. If it takes you a few more minutes to lock up your bike, then it will be more difficult for a thief to break the lock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Comfy Clothes (No Lycra Necessary)<\/strong> – essential<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You don\u2019t<\/em> need to dress like a pro cyclist. Just go for comfy, weather-appropriate gear. Something breathable, maybe a waterproof jacket that folds up small, and shoes you can pedal in (trainers are usually fine). If you\u2019re riding a lot, padded shorts worn under<\/strong><\/em> your normal clothes can work wonders, and your bum will thank you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Lights (Even in the Daytime)<\/strong> – essential<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Some e-bikes come with built-in lights powered by the battery\u2014brilliant! If not, you\u2019ll want front and rear lights that are USB rechargeable and bright enough to catch the attention of drivers. Daytime running lights aren\u2019t just for cars anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve got a motor now\u2014why carry everything on your back like a pack mule? A good rear rack, paired with panniers or a rack-top bag,<\/strong> makes life much easier. Groceries, spare layers, picnic bits\u2026 it all fits neatly and keeps your spine happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not just for cold weather! Gloves make a big difference on longer rides or bumpy tracks. They help with grip and reduce the dreaded tingly hands. Plus, if you do take a tumble, they\u2019ll protect your palms from a nasty scrape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

7. Repair Kit & Pump<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t panic\u2014you don\u2019t need to become a bike mechanic. But a basic puncture kit<\/strong>, tyre levers, a mini pump<\/strong>, and a multi-tool are good to have with you. Especially if you\u2019re riding solo or in the countryside. Add a spare inner tube and you\u2019re ready for most little hiccups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bonus: Phone Mount<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Great for navigation if you\u2019re using cycling apps or Google Maps. I use \u201cQuad Lock\u201d and it\u2019s as safe as houses. Once it\u2019s on there, it\u2019s not moving. Just don\u2019t scroll through Instagram while riding, yeah?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
