If, like me, you are reluctant to ride your e-bike through icy roads, it\u2019s time to send your machine into hibernation. But that doesn\u2019t mean you can just park it and forget it. Choose the Right Home for It<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cold weather won\u2019t kill your e-bike outright, but moisture, extreme temperature drops, and neglect will. Find a storage spot that\u2019s cool (not freezing), dry and sheltered. Ideally, a room, cellar or garage that stays around 10-15 \u00b0C is best. If the battery is removable, bringing just the battery inside during the coldest months is a good option, see my later comments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>2. Clean and Check It Before You Park It<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before storage begins, give your bike a proper clean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Remove mud, salt residue (especially if you\u2019ve ridden later in autumn or even winter), and grime from the chain, frame, brakes and moving parts. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Salt, in particular, is very corrosive to metal. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Check and tighten bolts, check brake pads, and lubricate the chain and components. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Pump the tyres up to the correct pressure so they keep their shape. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"5258\" src=\"https:\/\/2design.co\/ebike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IMG_0414.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5258\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"5969\" src=\"https:\/\/2design.co\/ebike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Drossendorf-1.jpeg\" alt=\"KTM, panniers, ebike ladestation, bike charging\" class=\"wp-image-5969\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"3902\" src=\"https:\/\/2design.co\/ebike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IMG_6497.jpg\" alt=\"L'Eroica, Tuscany\" class=\"wp-image-3902\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>3. Battery Matters \u2014 Store Smart<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:18px\">The battery is the heart of your e-bike and also the trickiest part when it comes to winter storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Remove the battery if you can and bring it indoors where the temperature is stable (\u224810\u201320 \u00b0C is ideal). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Charge the battery to around 40-60% (some sources recommend up to 70%). Avoid storing it fully charged or fully drained for long periods. See what the manufacturer suggests for your particular model. The key is not to have your battery fully charged or empty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Do <em>not<\/em> charge the battery when it\u2019s cold (below ~5\u201310 \u00b0C) as this can damage its lifespan. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Periodically check the charge during winter if your bike will be stored for many months. Prevent deep discharge. <br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"5524\" src=\"https:\/\/2design.co\/ebike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IMG_0501-900x1200-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5524\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"6782\" src=\"https:\/\/2design.co\/ebike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Bike-workshop.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6782\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"1967\" src=\"https:\/\/2design.co\/ebike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IMG_3626.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1967\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>4. Storage Routine for the Frame &amp; Components<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the bike parked and battery sorted, a few extra steps will help maintain everything:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Cover the bike to protect it from dust and humidity\u2014use a breathable cover rather than a plastic one that traps moisture. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Keep the tyres inflated and, if possible, raise the bike off the ground (using a stand) so the tyres don\u2019t deform.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Put a little oil on the chain, the crank, and the cassette. Always avoid getting oil on the brake discs or pads.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Disconnect or secure any detachable electronics or accessories (lights, panniers, etc.) so they\u2019re not exposed to moisture or cold.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>5. Get Ready for Spring Now<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the first warm ride of the year, you\u2019ll thank yourself for the prep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a shop services your bike, it is best to get this done when you are finished with the bike at the end of the summer\/autumn or over the winter period. There are very good reasons for this; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Bike shops often offer a discount on bike service during this period because they are not so busy and need work for their staff. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">If you want to get on your bike as soon as the weather is good in the new year, just remember that so will everyone else. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">The bike shops are very busy in Spring, so you may have to wait several weeks, or even a month, to book your bike in for a service.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">The moral is: get it done early!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read through all my blogs on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.Ebike-Europe.com\">http:\/\/www.Ebike-Europe.com<\/a> to ensure that you are ready, fully inspired to ride correctly, safely, and know where to go!<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"6711\" src=\"https:\/\/2design.co\/ebike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Us-at-the-top-of-Gaisberg.webp\" alt=\"Us at the top of Gaisberg\" class=\"wp-image-6711\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Looking forwrd to future adventures<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"6745\" src=\"https:\/\/2design.co\/ebike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Buchensteinwand-group-on-bikes.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6745\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Summer cycling<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"6907\" src=\"https:\/\/2design.co\/ebike\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/day-before-2.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6907\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fully ready to ride my bike<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Pros &amp; Cons of Winter Hibernation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\"><strong>Pros:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">You\u2019ll preserve battery health and frame condition through winter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Less stress in spring, your e-bike is ready to ride, not a repair project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Taking time to clean and store your e-bike is therapeutic; I find it is a form of closure from one season to the next.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cons:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">Requires a bit of effort and perhaps indoor space for the battery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">If you have the opportunity to ride your bike over the winter, then you will need to repeat this process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"\">You\u2019ll still be off the saddle for a few months, so you may want to think about an indoor exercise bike to keep you in the mood and &#8220;bike&#8221; or, in my case, saddle fit&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Stay Connected<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2 weeks&#8217; time, I will update on my recovery from shoulder surgery.
