D\u00fcrnstein, Wachau<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Danube bike path between Passau & Vienna is very popular with cyclists in summer, and one of my favourite areas on the route is D\u00fcrnstein in the Wachau. This beautiful wine region is also renowned for its apricots, and a wide range of products is made from them. I tried to sample a few of them, such as marmalade, cake, str\u00fcdel, dumplings, or just fresh off the tree. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u00fcrnstein in the Wachau is a fairytale village with cobbled streets that hark back to its medieval roots. You can\u2019t miss D\u00fcrnstein from the river: it\u2019s the one with the blue church tower! A heart-pumping hike to D\u00fcrnstein Castle gives you a great view over the valley along the Danube, which, by the way, is not blue! I’m not sure where the Blue Danube came from, but I don\u2019t think the mucky grey-brown Danube has quite the same ring to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
