T\u00f6dling Alm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This T\u00f6dling Alm (mountain croft) is in a clearing above Hochfilzen in the Pillerseetal region. It sits on a plateau in front of Spielberghorn Mountain. As a result, has an amazing backdrop as well as views. The T\u00f6dling Alm sits at around 1340m, with the highest part of the route being 1375m. So it’s a fair trip up; however, your prize is a treat when you get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can access the route from the main road just outside Hochfilzen if you are heading towards Leogang. Or from Feistenau, which is west of Hochfilzen on the way to Fieberbrunn. I went from the Leogang side as the other route up is too difficult towards the top for my skills. It is not a proper track and it shows as a difficult track on the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Track<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The track from the Leogang side is a forest track with a good surface with a nice gradient. The majority of which is between 8-10% therefore it is a steady ride up. It goes on for a bit, and towards the top, I got bored as it is just the track and trees with no view. However, once you get to c.a. 1320m, it opens out to a clear area providing the most wonderful views towards Saalfelden, St Johann in Tirol and north towards Waidring and the Steinplatte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The T\u00f6dling Alm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The T\u00f6dling Alm is a small farm used in the summer for milking the cows that are grazing. So you can visit a working farm. This alm serves food and drinks to walkers and cyclists with a steady stream of tourists and locals all day. It is such a beautiful place to stop, take in the views, and congratulate yourself on a job well done. Your hosts are very friendly and provide delicious food, all prepared on-site. It’s worth the trip up just for a taste of their buttermilk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To go back down, you can go back the way you came up. Or you can go on and down the mountain towards Fieberbrunn. The track goes past a little chapel and on down the mountain. This is where the track gets a bit tricky, it is a grass track for farm vehicles rather than a forest track. One that would be used for all-terrain vehicles. Take it slowly or get off if you feel uncomfortable. But this is why I wouldn\u2019t try that route to come up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you get down to another alm, the track is much better. This is also the start of another sharp up, but it is only for about 1 km. The rest of the track down to the valley is a forest track, and eventually, you join a tarmac road which takes you to the main road back up to Hochfilzen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have done this tour a couple of times, and I love the views most of all. This time we started off early as it was during a heatwave. So we were trying to avoid the heat, but we didn\u2019t bank on heavy rain. We watched as the cloudburst moved our way, which resulted in having to to take cover under a farmer’s hut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
